Green Phoenix Relics

Unique Mixed Media Art & Decor.

Works in Progress ↓

I haven’t been great about adding to this page for a bit… however, I thought it would be a great place to show some of my smaller pieces that I don’t usually post on the main website. I sell quite a lot of these at the art fairs because they are small, have a great price-point and each one is unique. I refer to them as, “Jewelry For Your Home,” because they are like big earrings to put in the windows of your home. They range in price from $32 to $42 dollars and are filled with millefiori glass, bejeweled sea life/insects, colored glass and more. Please email me if interested (I don’t put them in my online store because they sell fast and it takes more time to photograph and post them before they are sold). I ship these in a small Priority Mail Flat Rate box.

New 3-D Mosaic

I’ve been getting requests to create mosaics that would fit in smaller rooms, like bathrooms, so this first one suits the new coastal environment I’m living in down in Dana Point, California.

It’s difficult to tell from this photo, but this piece has a rolling surface of multiple highs and lows with green crystals justing out towards the viewer. It is being created with many tiny millefiori glass pieces mixed in with all the different styles of mosaic tile I am using.

Should be complete in a few weeks!

Almost finished with my series of “Art Wreaths” exploring the concept of the wreath as an Art Form, more so than a traditional folk craft. I’ve been incorporating more mosaic elements as I go along.

Work In Progress… (Just finished this one!)

I’ve spent the last year exploring the idea of the wreath as more an “art form” than as the traditional folk craft it is usually categorized as. When I thought of wreaths in the past I usually pictured the holiday version one might see on the doors of homes during Christmas… and the next thing that came to mind was wreaths made of flowers adorning a funeral.

I decided I wanted to treat the wreath as a piece of art you might hang on a wall. Flowers and live greens tend to die quickly, so those wouldn’t work as a long-term medium. Also glass ornaments were definitely way too seasonal to keep up year round. I liked the idea of recycling, so I decided to use old wine corks as the jumping off point. Corks last, they can be drilled into and hold adhesives well.

So far I’ve made over a dozen wreaths and each one I create, I learn new techniques and get more ideas. The one I just finished is pictured here. I’ve been incorporating a mosaic element in the last few and really like how it looks, so will continue to do so in future projects. I’ve also tried to find as many recycled, vintage or repurposed chandelier crystals and antique beads as I can find as they add so much more character to the piece (plus I just prefer recycled materials when I can use/find them).

Most of the wreaths I’ve made are posted on my Instagram page, but I haven’t shown any of them at shows just yet. I’m in the process of transforming some pillars I got from a Target commercial (thanks #EcoSet for the materials!) into display pillars to hang the wreaths. I just applied to one show for the Spring, but plan on applying to a lot more at the start of 2020.

I hope you’ll continue to check back and see my progress!

Just Finished!

Recycled from three separate chandeliers & re-imagined:

I built the base of this piece from scratch because I combined pieces from a chandelier I found with 3 matching candle wall sconces and a dozen brass leafs. I got such a great creepy-cool vibe from the busts and I envisioned the whole piece in a multitude of reds.

The base is covered in many shades of red mosaic tile and once I completed that, the entire piece was covered and dripping with red chandelier crystals (although the plan was always to have this be a hanging candelabra when completed).

This particular project to a little over 2 months to complete and I’m really happy with the finished product compared to what my original vision was when this piece was just an idea.

See below for the final outcome.

I’ve been sitting with this piece for a while, waiting for a color-inspiration to speak to me... Finally, all at once I saw it in silver with just a small bit of blue helping the cameos pop out, and then dripping with clear/white crystals, sliced blue agate/druzy/quartz pendants and a few silver/blue crystals. This project is still on my waiting list, but I needed to get it started once inspiration struck.

I have about 7-8 projects lined up and I wish I could do them all at once! I’m excited about a vintage chandelier I have planned in a “monkey & banana” theme (!?), and then I’m building (out of 3 antique brass chandelier busts) a candelabra all in blood-red mosaic tile (on the frame holding the busts) dripping with red drop-crystals. I can’t wait to get started!

Golden Hollywood: Completed

Golden Hollywood...

This project was challenging and I really enjoyed the process of trying to figure out how to recreate all the minute details of the Chinese Theater. Although I feel like I reached the finish line of what I started out to accomplish, I’ve realized that there are endless possibilities of pieces I could add to this… and I’ve already decided there is one more piece I want to add, maybe two.

I still haven’t got a proper photo of all the pieces together, but now that I want to add another visual landmark, I guess that photo will have to wait.

Stay tuned!
